Double Page Spread Draft

Fresh from the studio, literally, he’s just driven down the road from ‘Skyhammer Studio’ to meet Pyramid magazine in a small 50’s style French café in Ellesmere Port. Sam Carty, frontman of a great undiscovered and under the radar band ‘Nuclear Weasels’ says he visits this place a lot when they’re recording. We can see why, it’s very relaxed just like he is.
He sits, orders a tea; Thé des Sages. According to him, one of the best tea’s in the world. And he’s ready to go…

> So it’s your first album, how was the writing and recording of it all?
Well some of the songs on the album had been written when we first started and some we were finishing in the studio, so it’s an album that shows different stages of us throughout our band life. The whole recording process of it was quite nice really! We had a lot of help from other bands who showed us how preparation is key and when Lauren [Mayberry] come into the studio she gave us a few tips.
> You teamed up with Lauren Mayberry from ‘Chvrches’ for your first album! How did you find it working with such an incredible artist?
I can’t really describe it! She taught us so much as well as singing on a couple of tracks. You’ll hear in the new single ‘Content with Breathing’ how great our style works with her voice, it all comes together so nicely. We’ll definitely try work with her again… If she’ll have us!
> Do you and the rest of the Weasels find it relaxing to record or are there a lot of arguments?
It depends how much one of us messes up! There were times in the studio that really tested our patience. One of us can be laying down a guitar or bass track that we can’t quite get perfect and we’ll have to either sit there and be patient or leave the room until they’ve got it. But you know we’ve known each other for nearly a decade, we’re brothers… We fight like the brothers and love each other like brothers.
> Would you say that you prefer spending time in the studio or getting out there touring?
For us I think it’s an equal amount of both. Both can be amazing in their own way! It’s so nice to lay down a track that you’re so proud of in the studio but it’s also nice to get out there and hear fans singing those songs back to you on tour.
> Have you got a tour planned for the album release?
We’ve got a few dates in the UK sorted for the end of summer and a couple of album launch parties in our hometown of Bishops Castle. We think it’s special to go back to the place where it all kicked off for us, gives us a warm fuzzy feeling! But yeah, details of the tour will be released soon, as well as some European dates soon too.
> What’s the wildest thing you guys have done while touring?
We we’re doing a little tour down south last summer and we had a few shows in Bristol to end with. One night we decided to check out a pub and have a few drinks, the usual. But we ended up doing a ‘golden mile’; which is basically drinking pint in as many pubs in the area as you can! It was one if the wildest nights we’ve had but I won’t go in to too much detail about what happened as I might get in trouble.
> How many pints did you all manage?
Me personally… As far as I can remember, around 12. The other chaps probably had a few more; I’m a bit of a light weight.
